The Gulf of Tonkin resolution
The Gulf of Tonkin resolution was passed on
August 7, 1964 and it was passed in response to the Gulf of Tonkin incident, in
which there were two alleged unprovoked attacks by North Vietnamese Torpedo
boats on the boats of the US seventh fleet in the Gulf of Tonkin. The
resolution gave the President all the power to take measures that he deemed
right for the safety of the US and against any attack by the Vietnamese. The
matter was controversial and still remains controversial because it gave the
President blind power to do whatever he wanted to do and was not accountable to
anybody. This especially is a matter of debate among the American public.
