Deontology
Deontological ethical systems square measure characterized by a
spotlight upon adherence to freelance
ethical rules or duties. To form the proper ethical selections, we've to know what
our ethical duties square measure and what correct rules
exist to control those duties. Once we follow our duty, we tend to square measure behaving virtuously.
Once we fail to follow our duty,
we tend to square measure behaving amorally. Usually in any deontological system, our duties, rules, and
obligations square measure
determined by God. Being ethical
is therefore a matter of obeying
God. The approach taken by shopkeeper 1 is Deontology, because it is the shopkeeper's duty to do what is the best for the business, and he/she is acting according to such duty. The approach taken by shopkeeper 4 is Utilitarianism, because her personal emotion is involved. Her caring about the customers makes her feel happy to provide good service and charge fair prices. In the short run, the approach by shopkeeper 4 might be more effective, because I believe a person performs the best when she is doing what she loves doing. In the long run however, approach #1 may be more effective because it is a more consistent way to perform well for the business. If someday the feeling or values of shopkeeper 1 has changed, she may not want to treat the customers well any more. Shopkeeper #1 on the other, will always perform according to she duty, which is always effective
