A Big Step Toward 'Designer Babies'—and Big Questions
The genetic engineering typically
includes several good things, possibilities & improvements in the society.
The designer baby technology is the used by those parents who just want to make
sure that their child would be healthy and disease free. This technology is
totally a boom for those couples who are not naturally able to have child
because they would be born with the several genetic diseases. The advantage of
the reproductive technology would protect the children from any disease, suffering
and minimize the overall medical cost of looking the child. It is very painful
and time consuming to cure the disease stricken child and then all these hassle
could be removed by the medical technology. Then there would be no more worries
of having the special medical claims attention and no more sitters with the
doctors. The cost of this technology i.e. IVF and PGD would be very less than
the overall cost and the emotional strain by having the disease ill child. One
of the most important points which support the use of the designer’s babies in
the society is that it prevents certain genetic diseases. PGD can test for
about a dozen of the most critical genetic diseases which include the cystic
fibrois, several familial cancers, cell disease, muscular dystrphy etc. It is
clearly verified with the several test that the use of reproductive techniques
would completely eliminate the genetic diseases. The final argument of having
the designer babies is that it is very beneficial of making the second child to
become as the future blood and bone marrow for earlier child. So the second
child would help the elder child from getting sick. It is very difficult to judge what is
ethically or morally correct or wrong with preventing the baby from suffering a
disease threatened life. The parents should be legally allowed to have the
reproductive baby technology just to have the babies more healthy and safe and
the technology must be strictly regulated by the rules of the government to
make sure that it is only used for the ethically purpose.
The increasing and the demanding
power of the genetic technology would definitely give the parents best options
of developing their unborn child traits in order of not having any ancestor
disease, instead the parents can make them muscular, tall, and intelligent and
in fact can have their desirable traits. The advantage of the reproductive
technology would protect the children from any disease, suffering and minimize
the overall medical cost of looking the child. The parents have the opportunity
to remove all the ancestor disease with the use of the technology. In this
society the parents can actually choose the desired traits through the catalog
& shops for traits to design their babies. The choice of the child's traits
can be fruitful as if the parents have the ability to choose the mental,
physical and in fact the emotional traits of their children then the parents
would be able to make their ideal family, which they actually desires. There
are lots more pressure to the pregnant mothers to have the test for healthy
checkup of the baby & the pressure become more till the time of delivery.
So around the globe parents are only wants the best opportunity for their
children so that they have the healthy and safe life and if the parents have
the choice to but biotechnology that gives their unborn child a disease free
future and they will definitely engineer children with the desirable traits.
There are several couples
prevailing in the society who are not able to blessed with the child or not
enough capable of having baby as they would get the genetic disease and die at
the time of birth or may be at the younger age. These parents can use the
benefit of the designer baby technology where they change the hereditary
development of the egg which permits these couples to have the healthy baby.
The designer baby can also used to act as a second child baby where they can
helps the elder child from any disease by behaving as a donor for blood &
bone marrow.
The designer baby
technology would completely change the human life and it is typically changing
it to the cloning. In fact in this world everyone would want the smart,
intelligent, healthy child which is not possible for every couple. There are
several risks having this treatment to the parents. During the treatment, if
any process is not done properly then there would be a possibility of
accidently finished of embryo. The genetic engineering technology is not safe
completely as it is only in the testing phase. The use of this technology
create a gap within the society as designer babies would be act as superior
with the normal babies in terms of better looking , smartness etc. It also
cause that non designer baby would miss any opportunity of jobs and various
other things which makes a restriction of getting selected to any opportunity. The
after results of this technology are not predictable so this could cause
challenges later to the baby's family tree. Geneticists could not estimate
every gene completely so it is more likely that mistakes would be happened in
this process. Last the complete procedure is also not cheap and not every
family can afford this expensive treatment. The use of the designer baby
technology is ethical in the society if the reason behind having this treatment
is right but unfortunately if the reason is not valid like having blue eyes to
my child is my fantasy is like useless reason and then this technology would
not help the people in the right direction. These technologies are only valid
for those couples who are having certain predetermined medical conditions would
be considered for the treatment whereas with the case of postmenopausal women
condition would not be considered for the treatment. These genetic technologies
are made for only those couples who really need to have this, not for those who
are having problem in conceiving the baby. This process should be natural as
much as possible if the parents can have this naturally then why the parents
want to spend thousands of dollars in this process.
The genetic engineering
technology can minimize the possibility of having the child of being born with
the various serious diseases like spinal muscular atrophy, familial
hypercholesterolemia, Down syndrome and rare blood disorders etc. Those couples
who are inherited with the medical problems such as obesity, high blood
pressure, diabetes etc and disease such as arthritis, thalassemia, cancer,
hypothyroidism and Alzheimer's disease would go and have the designer baby’s
treatment to prevent the next generation from the genetic disorders. In this
process the disease having genes would be eradicate and only those who are
disease free would be implanted in the uterus and which would ensure that the
next generation child would be healthy and safe child. With the use of this
designer baby technology the couples are secure that their child would not have
to be fight with the same diseases that their family and ancestors are went
through.The designer baby technology creates a better understanding of genetic
engineering for both to biologist and genealogists. This technology is totally
a boom for those couples who are not naturally able to have child because they
would be born with the several genetic diseases. It would enhance the man life
up to 30 years. It would prevent the designer baby from genetic disease such as
Alzheimer's, Spinal Muscular atrophy, Down syndrome etc. It also minimizes the
risk of having the obesity, cancer, diabetes and anemia etc. It also permits
the parents to give their child a better safe and healthy life. It also reduces
the risk of mitochondrial disorders among the babies. The advantage of the
reproductive technology would protect the children from any disease, suffering
and minimize the overall medical cost of looking the child. The parents have
the opportunity to remove all the ancestor disease with the use of the
technology. It is not compulsory that every parents have gone this treatment if
they are disagree with the treatment don't engineer their child. With this technology
parents can engineered their child in several ways such as education, prenatal
supplements, religion and morally. This technology also follows the ethical
agreement so that no law would be disobeyed.
The more use of the reproduction of designer baby technology
must be limited by the laws of government, ethics and money. According to the
act of 1990, Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority is having the
responsibility to figure out that these genetic technologies are only used within
the legal and ethical cases and thus imposes several limitations on the use of
these technology. The designer baby technology is used by those parents who
just want to make sure that their child would be healthy and disease free. These
technologies are only valid for those couples who are having certain
predetermined medical conditions would be considered for the treatment whereas
with the case of postmenopausal women condition would not be considered for the
treatment. The use of the pre implantation genetic technology is only for
having the healthy child to the parents but not for the benefits of a sibling.
Even though there are various good things that can be achieved from the use of
reproductive baby technology which is used on unborn babies but it is very
wondered that if couples don’t have the right reasons to use this
technology. The choice of having the use
of this technology would be dangerous just because it is very much limited to
the regulatory and financial restrictions and therefore it is unpredictably
leading to the disadvantage. Today several spouses are having limited access to
the treatment services through NHS and it is also restricted by the several regulations.
With such lack of availability, it is only opt only by those parents who actually
want to use this reproductive technology to have the desired child. Babies are not
the product or any service which must be specially designed just to show off in
the society. If you want to design your babies then you are not to be called as
a parent because if you are not willing to accept the baby as it is then how
you are supposed to be called a parent. In life, schools several child taught
by the teacher that they are born for a reason and they have to accept it the
way they are, if the parents don’t understand this, how would be the child.
Most of the people are not in the favor of having the babies
with the technology of genetic engineering, and even though they also critics
of the designer babies who said that the second baby is used to prevent the
elder baby from having any disease, it’s like the parents only having the
second child just to ensure that the first child is disease free. In other
words, with this technology parents are making their own child to act as a organ
donating factory, which is pathetic. They are like they treat their child as a
product that is not be being loved & appreciated as another member of the
family. In the society several people
also made an argument that with the use of genetic technology just to remove
disability undermines the rights of the disabled people, it also promotes selfish
& even eugenic tendencies among the parents & breach the law of the
nature which everyone must be respected. One of the strongest arguments against
the use of designer baby’s technology is that it would direct lead to the gap
between the rich & the poor. Ronald Bailey, the writer of “Hooray for
Designer Babies” also highlights the high cost of this advanced baby
reproductive. The treatment includes the cost of both the medical and the lab
staff which cost approx $7500 to the couple and the pre implantation genetic diagnosis
would also cost extra charges of approx $2,500 which is very high amount to any
couple. It is completely not possible to genetically increase the physiological
or physical traits but may be in the future it would be possible. Then parents would
be able to choose the athletic ability, intelligence, musical talent & even
their character of their children. The couples, who are capable enough to pay
for the reproductive techniques, would be able to provide their children an
edge in becoming what is needed to become victorious in the life. Then it would
become a fear that designer babies will become a form of excellent human and
they would look down those are not engineered with the reproductive technology.

We stand the chance of advancing humanity, of discovering
new potentials and greatness. Of course we should do this. To those afraid of
losing genetic diversity, you are just noticing the dull, boorish conformity of
our era. But people use technologies however they want. One parent wants the
standard number of fingers, another thinks 12 is prettier (And as extra digits
don't cause any objective harm to physical function should be allowed). This
could lead to cultural trends leading to a humanity looking altogether
different from now, having traits that are even impossible without engineering
and having wide diversity. Adult gene therapy will follow soon and then anyone
who wants will be able to go to the genetics consultant to get wings, flippers,
gills, or what ever you want installed. That's the ultimate in freedom to be
able to determine one's body and the future of one's body.
